Yirra Yaakin presents the WA premiere of thought-provoking drama At What Cost?
Following sold-out seasons in Sydney, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company will bring the WA premiere of At What Cost? to Subiaco Arts Centre from Friday, July 17, to Saturday, August 1.
Set in a Tasmanian Aboriginal site of cultural and historical significance, Putalina (Oyster Cove), At What Cost? is a bold play exploring identity, belonging and cultural ownership in contemporary Australia.
Written by Nathan Maynard, the play follows Boyd, a Palawa man and expectant father who is forced to confront difficult questions when more people come forward to claim Palawa identity—some he recognises, many he doesn’t.
Artistic Director Maitland Schnaars described the work as timely and necessary, saying, “This is a story about identity, but it’s also about responsibility—to culture, to community and truth. It challenges us to sit with discomfort and really listen.”
“It’s about sitting together, listening properly, and respecting that these conversations are held with care in community,” he added. “The work invites audiences in, but it also asks them to reflect on their place in that conversation.”
The play stars recent WAAPA graduate Aimee Honor in her professional theatre debut, Jarrad Inman (Thirst), Calen Tassone (Conversations with the Dead, Confessions of a Pyromaniac) and Jessie Ward (Brother’s Wreck).
Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company’s At What Cost? is showing at Subiaco Arts Centre from Friday, July 17, to Saturday, August 1, 2026. Tickets are on sale now from artsculturetrust.wa.gov.au
