Which Way Home tells a powerful story of love, legacy and the road home

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company have announced their first production of the year with Which Way Home, showing for a limited season at Subiaco Arts Centre from Tuesday, April 28, to Saturday, May 9.

Written by Katie Beckett, the story tells of Tash and her dad as they go on a road trip home to Country. The play features a real-life father and daughter and beloved Yirra Yaakin performers Derek and Shaquita Nannup in a personal story that offers profound insight into father-daughter relationships and challenges traditional ideas of parenthood.

Beckett originally wrote Which Way Home as her first play and draws on her experience growing up with her single Aboriginal father after the loss of her mother.

“He deserved to know how much I really care for him and how much I appreciate everything that he’s done,” Beckett said.

“When something comes from the heart, and it’s honest and truthful, that’s something you can’t hide. I gave my heart over to a piece of paper—and people have connected with that. We all want unconditional love from our family. Who doesn’t love love?”

Katie Beckett is an actor and writer for both stage and screen and was nominated for a Green Room award for Which Way Home, which ILBIJERRI Theatre Company first produced, in 2017. The play had a sold-out season at Belvoir St Theatre for the Sydney Festival in 2017 before touring Australia in 2018.

Infused with humour and heart and resonating across generations, Which Way Home is a moving exploration of family, identity and home.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company’s Which Way Home is showing at Subiaco Arts Centre from Tuesday, April 28, to Saturday, May 9, 2026. Tickets are on sale now from artsculturetrust.wa.gov.au
