Memento Mori is a new metal/hardcore project that has just popped up on our radar featuring members of Förstöra, The Devil Rides Out/Chainsaw Hookers and Animistic. With their first show on the approaching horizon supporting Melbourne’s Dr. Colossus at The Boston on Saturday, September 24, we had a chat to Denis to see what Memento Mori is all about.
What’s this Memento Mori all about then?
We’re basically just a bunch of dudes who have been wanting to play together for quite some time, so we wrote some heavy riffs, started jamming and are just about to hit the stage together for the first time.
You’re all players from other killer bands, is this group an experiment to branch in new directions not explored in your other projects?
I think so, although I guess you can hear some influences from these other ventures. The idea was initially to write some songs based on a very specific style which none of us have really played before, however, we have changed the direction and re-worked the songs quite a bit since we first started jamming. We have a really wide range of personal influences, and as we were sharing songs and bands we were into during the writing process, we all ended up listening to quite a lot of Baptists and All Pigs Must Die, haha.
What is the ethos behind Memento Mori?
Remember that you will die and that everything eventually ends, so don’t be a douche.
Your first gig is supporting Melbourne band Dr. Colossus, is that a daunting task seeing that such a high profile gig is your first performance?
Sure, but we wouldn’t wanna have it any other way! This is the best kind of pressure, haha.
Any plans for recording soon? When can we hear some tunes?
We have talked about it, but we are definitely more focused on knocking out more songs first and fine-tuning our ‘sound’ before we hit the record button. We have a pretty good idea about where we’re heading though, so we’ll see what we can come up with in the new year.
