The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia reopened its doors on Saturday, August 29 with three new exhibitions: (Un)ladylike Acts: Recent Acquisitions from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art (pictured above), HERE&NOW20: Perfectly Queer, and A Sorrowful Act: The Wreck of the Zeewijk. These new additions join existing exhibitions: Boomerang – A National Symbol and Expressions of India: From the Ronald M. and Catherine H. Berndt Collection.
(Un)ladylike Acts: Recent Acquisitions from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art, by artists Penny Bovell, Nancy Borlase, Madison Bycroft, Sarah Contos, Kate Just, Maria Kozic, and Toni Warburton, is a provocative survey of attitudes toward art practice and its politics featuring a selection of contemporary artworks from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art, curated by Lee Kinsella.
Artists Benjamin Bannan, Nathan Beard, Janet Carter, Lill Colgan, Jo Darbyshire, Brontë Jones, Andrew Nicholls, and Colin Smith team up for this year’s HERE&NOW exhibition, HERE&NOW20: Perfectly Queer, curated by Brent Harrison. This exhibition features new work by eight contemporary artists that draws on lived experience, history, and culture to explore what it means to be queer in the 21st century.
Victorian artist and academic Drew Pettifer explores the first recorded moment in (European) queer history in Australia: a sodomy trial following the wreck of the Dutch ship the Zeewijk in 1727, where two young men were sentenced to death by marooning in A Sorrowful Act: The Wreck of the Zeewijk, curated by Director of LWAG Professor Ted Snell.
