Fringe like a pro with those in the know at The Laugh Resort
WA’s uniquely not-for-profit comedy club, The Laugh Resort, is back (after last year’s eight-month hiatus) to celebrate 35 years of bringing Perth laughs, with a fresh mix of new and returning comics in its 15th Fringe World from Wednesday, January 21, until Sunday, February 15.
Located in the heart of the city, The Laugh Resort remains the Southern Hemisphere’s longest-running comedy club and exists to champion WA comedic talent. A mainstay in the Perth comedy scene, the Club has spawned some of the industry’s biggest names, with its annual summer program of over 19 shows starring at least 50% WA artists alongside its hand-picked visiting acts.

Manager Di Star emphasised the program is not just about touring artists who visit Perth once a year, with the Club frequently bringing out homegrown works of brilliance specifically for this Fringe World.
“For every name you know, there are dozens as great. The trick is finding them among the 600-plus shows happening over summer. We’ve selected 70 local and international comedians for our 20-day program who are top of their class—in standup, improv, musical, character, sketch and storytelling comedy—virtually guaranteeing you can’t go wrong,” said Star.

To help audiences out further, The Laugh Resort’s 9 AT 9 is a weekly 90-minute sampler of the program’s featured and drop-in guest comics (much like its monthly year-round stand-up show, resuming from March), with nine acts at 9pm each Wednesday of the fest. Ideal for the indecisive or those simply wanting maximum bang for their buck, you can see 36 comics in just four outings by making this your weekly go-to, the first being 21 January.
Opening night also kicks off two shows by some local legends. Fringe World Blaz (Best New WA Work) winning writer/raconteur Matt Penny debuts his most personal hour—the comic tale of a baby, wedding and move to Australia occurring in one chaotic year, The Honeymoon (four shows only, including matinees). And, making a long overdue return to The Laugh Resort, Perth’s premier improv troupe The Big HOO-HAA! (with festival guests) deliver a five-night encore of their hit F***, Marry, Kill; seeing three couples in different outrageous scenarios each night, this is comedy guaranteed to finish with a ‘bang’!

Several HOO-HAA! alumni also make long-awaited returns with their own shows. Fans of Nadia Collins’ five-star absurdity, tell your friends—this Fringe World Best Comedy-winning Gaulier-trained clown is reprising her acclaimed physical comedy Virgin Bloody Mary for one week only. Meanwhile, Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd (Nickelodeon, ABC) is home from living on the east coast, premiering a weekly sketch/gameshow with festival guest shenanigans worth staying up late for: Saturday Night Dive.

The program is packed with even more local, national and international highlights, with all 19 shows having limited runs. Search The Laugh Resort at fringeworld.com.au to lock in a Fringe comedy binge for half the price before Wednesday, January 21, while many shows have Earlybird 2-4-1s.
