Homegrown heroes Bogan Shakespeare return to Fringe World with Taming of the Shrew

The homegrown heroes behind Bogan Shakespeare are back this summer, bringing their new production, Taming of the Shrew, to Heath Ledger Theatre at the State Theatre Centre of WA from Thursday, January 22, until Sunday, February 1.

Described as the team’s ‘first ever legit rom-com’, this retelling of the Shakespeare classic follows a couple’s trip to Margaret River. Set up by friends, one pair has never met before, and the headstrong Katherine clashes with the boisterous Petruchio in a weekend powered by chocolate, cheese and an alarming amount of wine. Trading bloodshed for banter, Bogan Shakespeare dives into its most frightening subject yet: middle-aged dating.

Taming of the Shrew is the latest creation from BS Productions, the team that for the past decade has been bringing acclaimed “bogan” adaptations of Shakespeare classics like Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet to the stage.

Taming of the Shrew has long been on our list of shows to adapt and has definitely been one of our most requested,’ said Dean Lovatt, creator and performer in Bogan Shakespeare. “I’m really excited for people to see what we’ve come up with. It’s got a bit of everything, it’s funny, obviously, but it’s also sad at times and contemplative and uplifting and even a bit sexy! Yeah, nah, I reckon it’s a good’un.”

Taming of the Shrew is showing at Heath Ledger Theatre at the State Theatre Centre of WA from Thursday, January 22, until Sunday, February 1, 2026. Tickets are on sale now from fringeworld.com.au
