This week’s best of the best features predominantly Aussie acts; all wonderful examples of true blue, homegrown talent. As much as international acts are exciting, it’s heartening to see how much we’ve got right at our doorstep. 1. Radiothon Opening Party 2018: Choose Your Own Adventure
RTRFM’s annual fundraiser is going off with a bang this Saturday night at Badlands Bar, featuring a plethora of beautiful artists to soundtrack the evening. Catch New Talk (fka Rag n’ Bone), HEEBIEJEEBIES, Montana Wildhack, DUMBLEACHERS, Noah Dillon and Skullcave in the main room, with FILTH GODDESS, Black Stone from the Sun, Ratking, Yomi Ship and Doublethink Prism in the side room. RTRFM DJs will also be churning out hits in the courtyard; there’ll be more choice than you can poke a stick at.
2. FriendlyJordies
The tumultuous politics of our world may feel overwhelming at times, but thankfully there are people out there who can make things a little clearer through comedy. Political internet comedian FriendlyJordies is stepping away from his laptop and onto the stage, taking his Aussie tour to the Astor Theatre this Friday night.
3. Big Feelings Made Manageable
Some of the scene’s coolest young acts are coming together at Mojos Bar to collaboratively navigate heartbreak, paranoia, joy, love, loss and everything in between through their personal styles of music. The night will feature New Nausea, Fraeya, new supergroup Big Cry in their first ever show and Nika Mo. It’s on next Wednesday, August 15 to soothe your mid-week woes.
4. This is Ska
Often unfairly neglected in this day and age, This is Ska serves to celebrate all that is great about one of the biggest genres of the ’50s through to the ’90s. The Isolates, Little Pedro & Special Brew will all be at the Rosemount Hotel to get you grooving this Saturday night. Even better—entry is free!
5. Local launches
This week we’re lucky enough to be graced with launches from jazz queen Jessie Gordon at the Ellington Jazz Club, rock and blues musos Refractory Road and friends at the Bassendean Hotel, saxophonist Alana MacPherson also at the Ellington Jazz Club and folk-roots artist Grace Armstrong and supports at The Bird.
