Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre reveals Summer Music program

Sunday Music at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre returns this spring with 19 Sundays of free live music, bringing together First Nations artists, emerging talent, local favourites and musicians from across Australia and beyond.

The season opens on Sunday, October 18, with Walyalup Kannajil and Perth hip-hop favourites Downsyde. Walyalup Kannajil returns to the stage after two years away to perform protest songs translated into Noongar, their work offering an inspiring example of education, reconciliation, generosity and sharing culture. Downsyde will bring their infectious live energy to the opening afternoon, the WA hip-hop trio having shared stages with international acts including Jurassic 5, Cypress Hill, Grandmaster Flash, The Black Eyed Peas and The Roots.

The program moves across genres and generations throughout the season, from the captivating vocals of Bella Dyer and the gritty storytelling of Noah Dillon to the roots reggae of interdisciplinary artist Jinan and the psychedelic rock, afrobeat and reggae of Grace Barbé, returning after a big year that has seen her perform with The Cat Empire.

Sunday, November 8 is specially programmed in support of PrideFEST, bringing the party to the Front Garden with powerhouse vocalist Queency joined by DJs Oniiké & LANI.

Later in the season, the program heads into more experimental territory, with Mossy Fogg‘s swamp blues and gravelly vocals paired with 2PCE Feed, the fuzzed-out blues duo of Abbe May and Lochy. January also brings Mubanga Studios, where audiences can learn Afrobeat dance moves from Mwaba Mubunga, alongside one of Perth’s best-known African fusion bands, Shangara Jive.

The season also features artists from across the country, including Casii Williams, a Western Aranda woman originally from Ntaria/Hermannsburg in Central Australia, who brings her distinctive sound and perspective to the Sunday Music stage. LamBros also joins the lineup from Sydney, fresh from a European tour and delivering a genre-blending sound driven by raw vocals, distorted acoustic guitar and a thunderous homemade hybrid drum-kit.

The season finale on Sunday, March 21 will be a celebration of music and movement, with De Cuba Son launching their new album across two sets. The first invites audiences to learn a range of partner dances before the band takes the stage for a second set featuring the new album.

City of Fremantle Director of Creative Arts and Community Pete Stone says Sunday Music continues to celebrate the breadth of music being made in WA and beyond.

“Sunday Music is a great chance to hear just how much incredible music is being made here in WA and further afield,” he said. You can come down for an afternoon, find a spot under the trees, hear something you’ve never heard before and discover your new favourite band—all in the surrounds of Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre. It’s free, thanks to Fremantle Community Bank, it’s relaxed and it’s a pretty great way to spend a summer Sunday.”
