Swing and Sway in the city this weekend with Jazz in the Square
Get ready to swing and sway the afternoon away as Perth International Jazz Festival brings Jazz in the Square to the heart of the city this Sunday, October 6. From 12pm to 5pm, Yagan Square Amphitheatre will transform into a vibrant oasis of music with free and family-friendly performances by bands from WAAPA, WAYJO and the Steve Hensby Band.
The WAAPA Django Ensemble brings the timeless sounds of gypsy jazz to life with their spirited performances, bringing the music of Django Reinhardt to life on stage. Meanwhile, the WAAPA New Standards Ensemble offers fresh interpretations of classic jazz standards, infusing them with modern flair and innovation.
Perth rapper Zero Emcee is also on board for the afternoon, joining with the 9-Fifty for a boundary-pushing set fusing hip-hop and jazz. From Perth to national stages, Zero Emcee’s socially resonant rap reflects his Noongar and Jingili heritage with pride.
Next on stage is the Steve Hensby Band, a powerhouse nine-piece ensemble with influences ranging from funk to ska to folk. Led by Berklee College of Music graduate Steve Hensby, the band boasts a formidable horn section and a reputation for toe-tapping live performances.
A variety of culinary delights and beverages will also be available at Yagan Square, including The Shoe, Gangnam Korean BBQ, Hiss and Smoke Japanese and Street Eats Eatery, along with a plethora of new dining options within Stories’ many bars and restaurants.
BYO picnics are permitted in the Amphitheatre, and a cushion or rug for comfortable seating is recommended. This alcohol-free, family-friendly event will happen rain or shine, so come prepared for the weather.
