New $100 million Surf Park set to make waves in Perth’s south

Years in the making, the WA Environmental Protection Authority has given approval for a brand new $100 million surf park to be built in Cockburn, announcing this week that the development does not present a substantial risk to the environment.

The state-of-the-art wave park will be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and is set to pump out 25 different waves to suit surfers of all abilities – from knee-high white water for beginners to pointbreak-style waves for more experienced riders.

Aside from offering up waves year-round, the new wave park will also provide personalised coaching, fitness and surf skate programs, surfboard shaping courses, regular boardriders club rounds, outdoor surf movie nights, photography exhibitions and more. Visitors can also look forward to enjoying yoga, meditation retreats, live music and cultural festivals.

There are also plans for boutique accommodation in the form of a rooftop glamper van village, a health and wellness centre, an outdoor performance space, beach club and restaurants.

The future of the development remained in the balance until this week, with the WA Environmental Protection Authority assessing the impact of clearing of 3.1 hectares of native vegetation required for the project to proceed. Extensive studies concluded the area was largely degraded and found no evidence of cockatoo foraging, roosting or breeding on the site.

Developers are taking steps to preserve native vegetation and are offsetting partial clearing by purchasing 18 hectares of banksia woodland and donating it to the state as a nature reserve. Going forward, the park will still be subject to rigorous assessment by relevant authorities like the Department of Water and Regulation.

Subject to all the regulatory approvals being received, construction is expected to commence in late 2023, and the Perth Surf Park will open to the public in late 2025.
