Metro City

Australians have this strange mutual respect for Canadians. We love their president, we love their ski slopes and we love Montreal-based Kaytranada. He’s an ounce of The Internet, 2 tablespoons of Flume and a pinch of Frank Ocean with a goddamn lot of friends. His well-awaited album 99.9% released this past September saw collaborations with the likes of Aluna George, Anderson. Paak, Vic Mensa, Little Dragon and (even) Craig David, just to name a few. Consequently, the drawn out anticipation to his event held at Metro City had us all pretty thirsty.
Opening for K-tran saw the French sex-song producer STWO rolling out some smooth sultry tunes that seemed to appease the milling 2000+ patrons. Jumpman, Panda, Wild Fire and Cashmere Cat were all thrown into the mix to create a bit of hip-hoppy kush weed chill, as it neared the hour of magic and illusion.
Donning white brills and a winner grin, he kicked things off to the cheers of the many. Keeping very close to his own work, the vibe was constantly groovy, relaxed and pulsing. The visuals of the night were continually evolving and challenging in a kind of dream simulator deal. The little jazzy riffs in his production meant that a crowd like Perth’s was often a bit unsure on how to move or chill but he really just kept on it and created a very wavy build of push and pull. He drew upon crowd favourites Lite Spots, Glowed Up and Bullets with whistles and cheers following suit. After hefty set lasting almost 3 hours, he ran to the front of stage and showed a great deal of mad appreciation.
Vibes, love, production and mixing were all of top quality as he clearly displayed a crazy sense of versatility and ability to bring something beautiful to the masses.
