Cub Sport feat. Darren Hayes
I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life
Independent
Cub Sport are at it again with another purely cinematic moment, and this time they have teamed up with Australian pop legend, Darren Hayes (Savage Garden). I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life describes a raw moment of gratitude felt by lead vocalist Tom Nelson.
Hayes’ voice adds another layer to the track coming in for the second verse and continuing the sweet and melodic aesthetic. The musical composition is a dreamy combination of silky synth and deep hooks.
The lyrical decisions made in creating this track drive home the context in which it was written. Nelson describes the moment he and his husband/bandmate Sam “Bolan” Netterfield were home with their pets when a wave of gratitude and emotion washed over him.
The song explores the challenges the two have overcome in getting to this moment, from the bullying they faced for being queer, to their marriage just last year, and the band’s growing success. This becomes clear through lyrics including “I never knew that I could be this free/ I can’t stop crying, angels here with me/ We’re getting everything we ever dreamed”.
The single follows the release of Cub Sport’s self-titled album released earlier this year where the band showcased a rebirth and confidence in their identity and carries through the synth-laden sounds from this record. I Never Cried So Much In My Whole Life is sometimes pop, sometimes sombre but always heartfelt.
This authentic and vulnerable look into the rising art-pop band is a welcome asset to their multifaceted discography, solidifying their talent.
