Last Friday was the finals of the Civic Band Comp, five bands took to the stage to showcase their goods and battle for the chance to win $1000 and a bunch of industry incentives. Bayview Suspect, Aviscerus, Banyon, WraithLord, Hercules Morse gave it there all, with Bayview Suspect emerging the winner at the end of the night.
We had a chat with the guys from Bayview Suspect…
Congrats on the win! How were the shows?
Thanks mate, the shows were great, we had a lot of fun. It was good that it was free for us to attend the other heats in the lead up to the finals because it meant that we got to see all the other bands perform, and see what we were up against.
We’ve seen your name around Perth before, are you guys relatively new to the scene? Where else have you been playing?
We’ve only been around for a year and we’ve been gigging pretty consistently since then, our main focus is getting our name out there and being heard by as many people as possible. We have played at The Civic, The Boston, The Rosemount, Swan Basement, Railway Hotel, The Good Shepherd, HQ, Geraldton YMCA and the grand opening for Superfreak Studios.
Can you tell us a bit about Bayview Suspect? What are your main influences? What can people expect from a BVS show?
5 guys that love doing what we do, we create music and play it for anyone who is willing to listen. We have had a lot of good feedback, at the end of the band comp though, someone said to Luke that our music is like pop songs for metal heads; catchy as fuck and gets stuck in your brain.
Our main influences are whatever we are listening to at the time of writing that particular song but we have been described as a Lamb of God/Whitechapel mix but we try to make it purely BVS.
When people are at our shows they can expect to have a lot of fun with twice as much bounce, the guitars are melodic, the double kicks are techy and fast, and JC’s spits are fast and catchy.
You must be stoked with the prize money! What are you going to do with the $$$?
We recently recorded our new song Paralysis with the American recording company Liquid Studios, the plan is to use the prize money to make a video clip for the song and release it as a single.
What is next on the agenda? Have you got any shows on the horizon where we can catch you?
We have 3 shows coming up. We are opening for OPIA at Amps on August 20, this being our first Amps show we are pretty excited. Then on September 2nd we are playing the Chaotic Promotions Metal Smash Bro’s gig at The Civic, this is Perth band Souls of Ghouls returning show with their new drummer and bassist. These guys gave us our first gig so it’s only fitting that we play with them now. To finish off this trifecta of brutality we are playing our first Last Night gig on September 15 which we can’t wait for, so we have an exciting 5 weeks ahead of us.
Awesome! Thanks heaps guys! Hope to see you at a show real soon.
Check out Bayview Suspect at their next show opening for Opia’s 10 Years Of Sound celebration at Amplifier Bar, August 10.
