Sydney bass producer Basenji has dropped a couple of surprises this week: a free download and a national tour. We’re yet to see an EP from Sebastian Muecke – he’s been busy this year signing with Future Classic, and playing festival gigs from Circo to Splendour – but new track Heirloom is particularly promising.
Heirloom ticks all the Australian sound boxes – trap percussion, choppy synths and atmospheric sweeps – but it arrives there by way of Nintendo. Think windchimes, temple blocks, and what sounds like a vocal guest spot from Kirby. It’s uplifting, earnest and sensitively arranged, which seems fitting for a young producer taking the Barkless Dog for his namesake (“The Basenji is alert, affectionate, energetic, curious and reserved with strangers. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play, and teasing the owner into play.”)
Basenji plays Welcome To The Valley on Saturday, October 25. You can hear and download Heirloom from Future Classic’s Soundcloud.
