He’s been saluted by Diplo for his notorious dancehall rhythms and electro house sounds, hailing from Houston Texas, Ape Drums returned back to Perth on Saturday August 6 to throw down some decent fire.
Warming up the night saw local boy Jordan Scott with some cool upbeat house numbers that made the club feel comfortable to any new comers. It was bassy and light that kept everyone up and jumping as we moved through to some jersey and philly club beats.
Into Ape Drums’ set we dived as he fired off some shots with his flip of Major Lazer’s Jet Blue Jet and hints of that ‘what cha waitin for, put cha back in it’ sample. He moved through a lot of that moombah sound with the thick drum lines and jungle riddims that I, myself enjoyed and expected from him but usual Ambar patrons moved to the dark corners in wait for something heavier with higher pitched synths.
The sign of a great DJ is his adaptability and ability to read the crowd, from what Ape Drums pulled out that night meant that he could cater to any niche of music, as he progress he played one of the heavier sets I had heard of his own pulling out some wobby dubstep and ending on some nice drum n bass, with Chase and Status’ No Problem being a definite highlight.
There is a lesson to be learnt for everyone from a gig like this and that’s to embrace the up-and-comers because a year down the track, you’ll be paying $70 for a sold out gig with kids who only want to be there because the girl they’re crushing on pressed attending on Facebook. Accordingly, I was fairly disappointed at the turn out for an artist that’s been given up’s by Major Lazer, Skrillex and Dilllon Francis.
Looking forward to more production come out of this guy and a wider acceptance into music you can really feel.
