Award-winning WA team put a ‘bogan’ twist on a Christmas classic
After nine years of sell-out shows, the multi-award-winning creative team behind one of WA’s most popular Fringe World shows, Bogan Shakespeare, is back with a brand-new, yet familiar, holiday spectacle.
Set against the backdrop of the silly season in WA, specifically Christmas Eve, A Christmas Carol will bring a hilarious and heart-warming reimagining of the classic Charles Dickens tale to Subiaco Arts Centre from Wednesday, December 4 until Saturday, December 21.
From the frantic search for the last Honey Ham, cleaning the back patio for that one time that guests will actually see it, to the anticipation of the annual Lynx gift pack from Aunt Linda, the production captures the unique quirks and traditions of the Australian festive period.
However, one individual will have none of it. One individual, if they can help it, will spend their Chrissie with no ham, no patio and no Lynx gift pack from Aunt Linda. This man is Ebenezer Scrooge and to the holidays he says “Bah Hum-bugger off!”
But this time of year, can be magical in more ways than one. Whether it’s the sun, the seafood or sinking a few, this time of year can play with one’s head. And this eve will be particularly special, for on this very night Ebenezer will be faced with the literal and figurative ghosts of his past, present and future and asked the age-old question “Mate, why you always acting like such a prick?”
A Christmas Carol is the latest creation from BS Productions, the team that have been bringing acclaimed ‘bogan’ adaptations of Shakespeare classics like Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet to stages since 2016. Last year they expanded their repertoire to ‘Bogan Literature’ with a West Aussie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
A Christmas Carol is showing at Subiaco Arts Centre, from Wednesday, December 4 until Saturday, December 21, 2024. Tickets are on sale now from artsculturetrust.wa.gov.au
