While Marvel Studios has been dominating the superhero genre and DC/Warner have been bombastically but efficiently alienating their entire fanbase, the folks at Fox have been hard of work prepping the latest iteration of the franchise that started the current comic book movie boom, and it looks like it’s been worth the wait.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past bridges the world of the first X-Men trilogy with that of the excellent but underappreciated X-Men: First Class by the simple expedient of having Wolverine (our man Hugh Jackman, naturally) travel back in time to the ’70s to help a young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, soon to be seen in the Irvine Welsh adaptation, Filth) avert a coming apocalypse. Action, explosions and stentorian proclamations of faith and hope ensue.
It certainly looks fantastic, the return of original director Bryan Singer is reassuring and the cast – Jackman, McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Michael Fassbender, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Lawrence and so forth – is jaw-droppingly good. As to whether it all gels together, we’ll have to wait until mid-2014 to find out. In the meantime, here’s the trailer:
