Ø ISLAND Anthem Of The Broken Mind gets 8/10

Ø ISLAND
Anthem of the Broken Mind
Independent

8/10

With an emphatic horn section opening proceedings and grabbing you by the scruff of the neck from the offset, this is not a track that just passes by in the collective noise that comes to make up indie rock in the digital era. There is a sense of conviction and composure amidst the widescreen collection of sounds and tones that make up the arrangement, and the listener is all the better for it.

It’s easy to let the addition of old school textures like horns distract you from the real essence of a song, but fortunately this has plenty of substance to go with it. There’s a real sense of community in this tune and all the wonderful collisions and collusions of multiple talents and personalities that go with it.

The song symbolises the emergence of indie rock that knocks down the limitations of the bedroom doors and encapsulates a broader sound. While they may not be influenced specifically by Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire it’s hard to go past the likes of them as an indication of their wholesome aesthetic.

Anthem of the Broken Mind is a well constructed, intoxicating and more importantly danceable piece that deserves your attention. Let’s hope there’s more of the same to come from this undeniably fun, unique and ambitious Perth act.
