Zero Emcee and WAYJO join forces forces for regional WA tour

Noongar/Jingili rapper Zero Emcee and WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) are joining forces for a regional tour of Western Australia.

The From Be-Bop to Hip-Hop tour kicks off at Margaret River Heart on Friday, August 9, followed by a show at Harvey Recreation & Cultural Centre on Wednesday, August 14.

The tour then heads south for shows at Esperance Civic Centre on Thursday, August 22, and Hopetoun Community Centre on Friday, August 23, before wrapping up with performances at Narrogin Town Hall on Friday, August 30, and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, September 12.

The collaboration between Zero Emcee and WAYJO, which started in Perth in 2022, has been praised for its innovative fusion of hip-hop and jazz. Emcee’s socially resonant rap has engaged audiences both locally and nationally, with the rapper having performed at both Perth venues and interstate events like Dreamtime at the ‘G.

Mace Francis, WAYJO’s artistic director, highlighted the success of the partnership, stating, “Zero is an excellent human, plus a great artist with strong and powerful messages. The big band line-up is the perfect ensemble to support his larger-than-life performer and his powerful lyrics.”

Emcee’s raps have garnered widespread recognition on social media for their reflection of his Noongar and Jingili heritage and steady commitment to representing Indigenous culture, with his stories amplified by the accompaniment of WAYJO’s 18-piece orchestra.

Emcee stated that touring with WAYJO was a ‘dream come true’. “This fusion of hip-hop and jazz appeals to music lovers of all ages, and I am really excited to take it on tour for new audiences across WA to discover it.”

The tour will also feature Q&A sessions and songwriting workshops with both Emcee and WAYJO, providing an opportunity for local communities to engage with the artists.

Zero Emcee and WAYJO’s From Be-Bop to Hip-Hop tour hits multiple venues from Friday, August 9 until Thursday, September 12, 2024. For more info and to buy tickets, head to wayjo.com
