‘Unforgettable spectacle’ Glow–Gleam–Dream to light up the city this weekend
Yagan Square is set to officially reopen and unveil the new-look precinct with a massive weekend celebration this weekend. Illuminate Yagan Square is a free event that offers a multitude of family-friendly activities and night-time entertainment across a thrilling two days.
On Saturday and Sunday, across five spaces, there will be over 50 simultaneous, free things to do, see and enjoy for different ages from 11.00am to late. It will also be the first chance to visit the multi-level super-venue Stories and the new Yagan Square adventure playground.
The Last Numbat
Programming across all zones is family-friendly to 8.00pm, and families should mark their programs for the two headline Amphitheatre 6.30pm shows combining performance, music, and projections, set to enthral Perth: the grand-scale Glow–Gleam–Dream on Saturday, and Phil Walleystack’s captivating KAYA on Sunday night.
Deborah Bonar's artwork with projection by VJzoo
Glow–Gleam–Dream, on Saturday, April 27 at 6.30pm, features an enchanting, 10-metre giant illuminated marionette, the star of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s interactive performance of The Last Numbat in a unique collaboration with Twine, a large-scale, interactive puppetry installation and performance narrated by Indigenous artist, Nadia Tavo.
For the first time, it will be combined with immersive visual projections by Indigenous Perth artist Deborah Bonar onto the puppet, digital canopy, and Amphitheatre surrounds.
Shadow Stories
Together with roaming puppets The Brolgas, this one-of-a-kind spectacle is accompanied by mesmerising Shadow Stories, distinctly Australian yarns told by talented storyteller Glenn B Swift with live music by Digby Hill and shadow puppetry by Perth audience members.
Named after the Australian crane, Brolga is a set of two sparkling roving rod controlled bird puppets that move gracefully above a crowd. As curious creatures they enjoy to interact with people and will delight onlookers with their intricate and ritualised dance.
The Brolgas
This creative collaboration between the team at Twine, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, VJzoo, and some of WA’s leading artists and performers promises to mesmerise audiences with its immersive visuals, soundscapes, and uniquely Australian tales.
Glow–Gleam–Dream hits Yagan Square Amphitheatre on Saturday, April 27, 2024. For more information head to yagansquare.com.au
