The Outryders
Hollow Victory/Should Have Known
Egomaniac Music
There was a time when you couldn’t go a whole weekend without stumbling across Joe Algeri playing his shiny brand of pop at the original music watering holes. He is now taking that work ethic to his home studio and releasing a swag of tunes via a handful of different outfits.
The schoolyard chums of Algeri and Paul Colombini clearly avoided the lure of the convoy of Monaro’s and the Kalamunda Hotel during their upbringing in the hills as they bonded over a the Sunnyboys and a crisp sounding six string. Hollow Victory is the third single for The Outryders recording project and kicks off with a snappy riff and well tuned harmonies from the get-go. A tidy hook, enthusiastic handclaps and just the right amount of glockenspiel is spread atop the tight rhythm section.
The Colombini penned Should Have Known has more grunt and is a chugging beast that tells a more sombre tale than its predecessor. Algeri’s vocals are clear and impassioned, showing his studious appreciation of some of the great melody makers from Gene Clark to Andy Sturmer.
The Outryders have again given a couple of tunes that are sure to stay in your melodic cortex well past their duration. They do singles well. It must be time for a long player sometime soon.
