Sound and vision: Weird Science brings unique audiovisual experience to Freo
Live music event Weird Science is set to take over the Signals Sound Laboratory in Fremantle’s historic Old Customs House on Saturday, July 20. Presented by Artsource, this unique event is an opportunity to see and hear some of Perth’s favourite local musicians as they deliver bespoke performances that respond to the laboratory environment, incorporating the wide array of heritage musical instruments and scientific test equipment.
Featured guest performers include electronic musician and composer Felicity Groom, drummer and producer Malcolm Clark (The Sleepy Jackson), and multi-instrumentalist and songwriter David Lawrence (Mister and Sunbird). Joining them are lab technicians Gaëtan Schurrer and Will Axten, complemented by live video projections from visual artist Nathan Thompson.
The Signals Sound Lab is an important feature of the main Artsource building at Old Customs House, located at 8 Phillimore St. in Fremantle. Set in a large internal space, the Lab is an interactive audiovisual experience powered by a vast array of interconnected music, sound, science and video technology.
The audience can get ‘hands on’ with the equipment before and after the performance at specially constructed workstations in the Lab, providing opportunities to construct and contort audio and video.
The Lab showcases a vast array of music synthesisers, broadcast technology, and computing and laboratory test equipment, all interconnected in a unique and fascinating way.
