Singer Anastacia Finally Unveils The Truth Behind Her Signature Sunglasses
Beloved singer Anastacia is back in Australia and already making headlines. The 56-year-old hitmaker is currently in the country to open the Penfolds Victoria Day Derby. Considered among the most fashionable and exclusive events in Victoria, these race days see only the biggest names as part of the occasion. Sponsored by elite brands like Lexus, the event’s guest performances are similarly just as renowned, which is why it’s no surprise that Anastacia was enlisted to participate.
As part of promoting her performance, the star guested on Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren, where she spilt the truth behind her signature sunglasses, putting to rest years of speculation about whether they’re purely for fashion or also used for function.
Why Anastacia always wears sunglasses
During her October 30th appearance on the breakfast radio show, Anastacia admitted that her eyewear is more than just an accessory. According to her, she’d always worn eyeglasses for her poor vision but kept getting unsolicited comments from men calling her a “sexy librarian.” Unhappy with that stereotype, she decided to wear specs with tints in her 20s. This kind of eyewear is referred to as prescription sunglasses. Available from trusted retailers like Sunglass Hut, this type of eyewear offers both protection and correction. This means that the lenses are not only coated with UV-filtering properties but they’re also tailored to address a myriad of refractive errors. Many users prefer to use this eyewear so that they can still maintain clear vision even when under the sun, while others, like Anastacia, appreciate them for their additional aesthetic value since they can come in models from stylish brands like Ray-Ban, Versace, and Tom Ford, to name a few.
Throughout her decades-long career, the I’m Outta Love songstress has been known to wear various types of sunglasses. These include everything from small tortoiseshell-framed brown sunnies to oversized retro-style ones with playful peach lenses. Although there are times that she goes sans this eyewear, sunglasses have played such a big role in her look that her fashion is always associated with them. To this, the star told the radio show hosts, “They became a very strange thing that I didn’t mean to happen, but it became, like, recognisable.”
Of course, the icon isn’t the only star to be closely linked with their eyewear. For example, singer-songwriter Elton John, who visited Australia a few years ago as part of his farewell global tour, is also known for his outlandish ocular choices. As per sources, the British legend has over 250,000 pairs of bold sunglasses to date. A few years ago, he even released a line of shades with Walmart, further underscoring how eyewear can help shape one’s career.
Understanding the singer’s eye health background
Providing more background, Anastacia explained that she’s worn corrective eye gear since she was six. Some reports state that her particular eye condition is myopia. Also called nearsightedness, myopia is a progressive disease that sees the eyeballs elongate. As a result, this makes it harder to perceive objects and details at farther distances. Usually, these occur in children, since their sensitive eyes are still developing and more vulnerable. Allegedly, John Lennon also had myopia, although he was initially treated using contact lenses. It was only in his later years that, like Anastacia, he found more comfort and confidence in his well-known eyewear.
Interestingly, Anastacia herself has already undergone LASIK. Back in 2015, she shared that she had chosen to have the treatment for better vision. At that point, though, she had yet to say that her ocular needs were pronounced enough that every single one of her sunglasses was also to improve her visual acuity. Although she’s yet to say if her vision is any better or worse post-surgery, since fans have come to expect her with sunglasses, the singer surely won’t be leaving them off any time soon.
