Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell (pronounced Derry) captivated the audience at The Irish Club of WA with his amazing vocals and melodies on Sunday night.

Spearheading the resurgence of Irish folk music, Farrell has been travelling the world showcasing his music as a solo artist since 2016.

Ciaran O’Sullivan opened the show with a 30-minute set alongside keys and backup vocalist Oisin. The set showcased a mix of original songs and traditional ballads like Black Is the Colour and a cover of Kathlenn Largey’s Dying Rebel. The harmonies between O’Sullivan and Oisin were amazing to listen to.

Daoirí Farrell then graced the stage for his first set. Farrell’s music perfectly blends traditional Irish and contemporary folk styles, which was demonstrated on his latest original song, Blackwater Side, and the following tracks, Fall Down Billy and Bonny Woodhall.

After a 20-minute interval, Farrell commenced the second set, performing the first five songs by himself before O’Sullivan and Oisin joined him on stage for the last two songs.

Throughout the show, Farrell’s humour came out in his stories between each song. The highlight, however, was when he incorporated a song about dog faeces into the show, which brought quite a bit of laughter from the audience.

Farrell, O’Sullivan, and Oisin’s music truly celebrates Irish culture and heritage. However, while their performances were enchanting, the excited crowd’s constant chatter made it difficult to hear it at times.

Farrell is definitely worth seeing next time he comes back to Perth. With his remarkable bouzouki playing and formidable vocals, he is a force to be reckoned with and a true talent.
