Kevin Parker & Friends @ The Rosemount
w/ POND DJs, Lyndsay Slohand, DJ Casserole, DJ Guru Barrymore & DJ Diana Boss
Tuesday, December 26, 2017
Kevin Parker got a bunch of his friends together to provide some tunes to dance to on Boxing Day at The Rosemount, but what could have been a cool night, was a little bit of a headache.
First to hit the decks was DJ Guru Barrymore & DJ Diana Boss aka Peter Bibby and Strawberry Pete. Next of Kev’s friends was DJ Casserole generally known as Felicity Groom. Jenny Aslett was next to take the stage as DJ Lyndsay Slohand, and the last group of friends to hit the decks before Kevin were the POND DJ’s for a super long two and a half hour set.
The main room was fairly empty until about half way through the POND DJs set, when it started to fill out a little bit more. Nobody was playing anything that I recognised, or anything many people wanted to dance to. The first song that I recognised was King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Gamma Knife.
When POND’s set was entering its last half hour, the tunes started to become a little more danceable but also a little bit bad. Their set ended on Gucci Gang which would have to be my least favourite song of the year by a long shot.
When Kevin Parker took to the stage for his set, he played a lot of generic crowd pleasing songs. He played Kendrick Lamar’s King Kunta, Daft Punk’s One More Time and even threw in a Mariah Carey track, among other, less memorable tracks. My favourite was when he threw down Daffodils, his collaboration with Mark Ronson. That is a song that I have always been waiting to hear a DJ spin, of course it only took Kevin himself to be DJing to hear it on the dance floor. He also gave Let it Happen a spin and, most predictably, The Less I Know The Better.
Overall the night was just like any other night at a club, just with a little more Tame Impala thrown in. It was a little lame and definitely nothing to write home about, but good for a little dance on an otherwise boring night.
