Joan and the Giants return with ‘deeply personal’ new single Feels Like Heartache
Local indie-pop band Joan and the Giants have today released their new single, Feels Like Heartache.
The new release follows their recent singles Good Times and Born in the Wrong Time, the latter of which won Best Rock Song and was runner-up for Song of the Year at the 2024 WAM Song of the Year awards last month.
These new tracks come in the midst of the band’s most successful year yet, highlighted by a performance alongside P!NK and Tones and I at Optus Stadium in March.
Feels Like Heartache is a gentle change of pace for the group, combining ghostly acoustic guitar with layered vocals and an eventual kick-in of drums to forge an unforgettable buildup and a release of sorrow.
“Feels Like Heartache is the most deeply personal and honest song we’ve written,” said frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth. “It’s centered around longing for the person you love more than anything, but knowing it’s an addiction and isn’t good for you. Being brutally honest isn’t easy, but honesty to us is a very important thing, especially in our songwriting.

Newton-Wordsworth and guitarist Aaron Birch have been creating music together, while also being in a relationship, for the past nine years. Despite all the band's highs in 2024, the couple have navigated tougher times in their personal lives.
“We wrote this song in the midst of a chaotic storm, and it was a cathartic way of saying how we felt about stepping away from each other,” Aaron Birch said.
Joan and the Giants will take the new tune on the road for a performance at the Needle in the Hay Finalist Party at Lady Hampshire in Sydney this Friday, July 12, and Yah Yahs in Melbourne on Saturday, July 13. The four-piece then return home to launch the single at Mojos Bar on Saturday, July 20, with special support from Siobhan Cotchin and Rosalie Chilvers.
