Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne dies aged 76

Heavy metal legend and lead vocalist of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, has passed away aged 76.

His death was announced on social media. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” the statement read. “He was with his family and surrounded by love.”

His family has asked fans to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Ozzy Osbourne was a founding member of Black Sabbath, still known as one of the most influential heavy metal bands in the world. The singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as a member of the band and again in 2024 as a solo artist.

Despite being fired from Black Sabbath for alcohol-related issues, the artist continued a successful solo career, releasing 13 studio albums, many of which received multi-platinum certifications in the United States. He later reunited with the band, joining them for their final studio album and their farewell tour, ending in 2017.

His final show was the Back to the Beginning concert with Black Sabbath just a few weeks ago on July 5, with the singer announcing it to be his last live performance.

“We have lost our brother,” said Black Sabbath co-founder Tony Iommi. “He loved what he did, he loved music, he loved playing together, and I’m so glad we had the opportunity of getting together again to do the [farewell] show,” he told BBC Radio on Wednesday.

“It was brilliant being with all the guys again, and the atmosphere, and it was brilliant for Ozzy because he really wanted to do that, he felt at home there and it was good for all of us.”

Artists such as Billie Joe Armstrong, Alice Cooper, and Lady Gaga have also expressed their condolences. Elton John referred to the singer as “a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods—a true legend.”

Henry Rollins, former frontman of hardcore band Black Flag, said it was “rare that somebody can be so synonymous” with a specific musical genre.

“But if you want to talk about heavy metal, first up it’s Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Everyone else comes after.”

RIP Ozzy Osbourne (1948-2025)
