EVENT GUIDE TOP 5 The weekend has arrived

The X-Press Event Guide has never looked more full of life than it does right now. To celebrate its glory, here’s another installment of our top five events for this week. For much more where this came from, check out the full Event Guide. If you notice anything we’ve missed, shoot through an email at [email protected].

1. Katy Steele

An Aussie national treasure who has her roots right here in Perth, Katy Steele is back on the road and plays her solo tour at Mojos Bar tonight. Whether you’re a fan of her recent solo album or her work with Little Birdy back in the day, this is certainly a unique opportunity to catch Katy on her own playing songs from all eras.

2. Skylab: Ground Zero

Anyone old enough to remember the 1979 Skylab incident will know of the frenzy and fervour it created, particularly due to the massive reward offered for the first person to collect a piece of it. Resident Artist at the Black Swan Theatre Company, Ian Michael, has been chatting to Stan Thornton — the then-17-year-old who was the recipient of the prize — in a series of shows having started on August 16 and ending on the 31st at the State Theatre Centre. Check our event listing for the full schedule of dates and times.

3. Mod Revival

The traditional UK bank holiday experience is making its way to Perth this Saturday evening at Gate One (Claremont Showgrounds) with a bevy of bands playing your favourite British hits from days gone by. With cheap drinks, best dressed prizes and Quadrophenia on loop the entire night… what’s not to love?

4. Becky Lucas

Since being a National RAW Comedy finalist in 2013, things have just been going up for Becky Lucas. Her achievements include multiple sold-out shows, a handful of MICF features and writing credits on Josh Thomas’s renowned ABC show Please Like Me. She’ll be at the Comedy Lounge from Thursday to Saturday as part of Six In The City with Gavin Baskerville, then performs her solo show on Sunday night at the same location.

Kill Devil Hills

5. Local launches

Tonight’s unmissable launches come from Rocket Ship Chaser at the Rosemount, Sgt. Hulka at the Aardvark and Web Rumors at the Bird. On Saturday we’re being treated to The Kill Devil Hills at Badlands, Noah Dillon at the Bird and Ø Island on Sunday at Four5Nine. Each are being supported by a bunch of talented Perthians, so check the links to get an idea of what you’re in for.
