Jack Rabbit Slim’s

I’ve followed this duo closely for the past 18 months out of both, an interest in the evolving Perth scene and personal curiosity.  From their humble monkey beginnings they’ve swung from branch to branch to reach the top canopy as kings of the jungle. Mad decent has them signed on, Dillon Francis, Diplo, Alison Wonderland have thrashed their tracks across the globe and now they’ve run their first string of headline shows across Australia. Who? You might ask… well, its Command Q, B*tch.

By 11, there was a queue trickling down the side of Jack Rabbit Slim’s as anticipation grew. A busload of die-hard fans from Kalgoorlie (a 500km+ trek) prided themselves on their clear commitment and were star struck to meet the moustache donning half of the duo.

By 12, the fluoro face paint covered a majority of punters in war stripes and the floor started to fill with a growing eagerness as Lolo BX ran the trap. Hailing from Bathhurst he didn’t just keep it one hunnit he threw it into overdrive and took it 1000 all the way. He gave us that Enschway collaboration ‘Counting on You’ and a few different Floss flips before he riled us up for the main event.

Then came the hour of chaos. An empty stage and a white screen with text of a foreboding nature – ‘Do you hear that? They are coming, the sound of their drums running, the crowd humming’ and an alien intergalactic feel that built to an absolute shit-fight of crashes, scratches and gunfire as Command Q burst onto the stage.

With one half belting the hi-hat and the other on the mic we were crawling through a heavy jungle of animal noises and robot talk, from Titan straight into the renowned D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F. They showed no signs of slowing as they brought out confetti cannons for all our ‘familiar faces’ and threw in Herobust’s version of poison dart. The speakers felt ready to give way as Digeridoo blasted us away and just when we thought we could catch a breather, surprise guest Shockone made a sly instrumental appearance.

As their EP warned us, they really were animals as they thrashed and jumped about on the decks, head banging to each drop thicker and heavier than the last. For their first Perth headline show, they beat those drums and with more gratitude, passion and engagement locals will see for a long while again.
