Returning to Perth Fringe World Perth with his award-winning show **Swingers**, comedian Christian Elderfield is set to delight comedy fans with his edgy, salacious and hilarious storytelling. **Swingers** – Christian Elderfield will play at the Queen Victoria Room at Albion Hotel & Downstairs Williams Room at Brass Monkey Hotel from Wednesday, January 28, to Sunday, February 8, with tickets on sale now. BEC WELDON sat down with Christian Elderfield to hear more about the show.

Hey Christian, thanks for chatting with us! Welcome back to Perth Fringe World! What’s been happening in the world of Christian Elderfield since we saw you last year?

It’s been busier than a bee on speed! I’ve been touring **Swingers**, and it’s sold out in Japan and the UK. Both these sexually repressed nations came out in force to watch the show! It was weird talking to a Japanese crowd who just sat and stared as I talked about sex toys. I was like, “Come on guys, you made them!”

That’s hilarious, and now you’re bringing **Swingers** back to Perth after an award-winning 2024 season as winner of a Comedy Weekly Award, with complete sell-out shows at Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. What do you have in store for Perth audiences this time around?

Perth is my favourite festival—it has small-town vibes but big d*ck energy. This city has a thriving scene of debaucherous people, and I love it! The show has evolved since last year with more punchlines packed in, but it’s still the thrilling rollercoaster of a story that won the Best Comedy Weekly Award last year!

Sounds like a wild ride! **Swingers** markets itself to anyone who has ever ventured into, or has ever been curious about, an alternate side of life. What inspired you to write a show about swinging?

For three years I was with a swinger, and for the first time in my life my WiFi connection was closed but my relationship was open! We shared many experiences—among other things. I had to write the show because the lifestyle is outrageous; without giving too much away, dinner parties would turn into orgies, and a drink with friends would lead to sitting on the couch at 4am in a room full of naked people demonstrating their sexual tricks and tips—it’s insane! The show really is an eye-opening experience, so come watch to find out more!

Were there any stories that were too salacious or didn’t make the cut in the show?

There were so many stories I couldn’t include because it would make the show too long because a Fringe show is the opposite of a penis—the shorter the better—and like a short penis, you want to leave your audience wanting more. One story that was cut involved a host of a residential sex party making a latex mould of my friend’s lady bits. He made two copies, one for her and one he used as an ashtray, or as he called it, a ‘gash tray’.

You’ve also toured internationally and performed for broadcast TV like Just for Laughs and Britain’s Got Talentwhat drew you to try stand-up comedy in the first place?

I had an English teacher in high school that said I should do comedy, and when I asked why, he said, “You’re a dick, but a funny dick.” Now as an adult, I perform at corporates, cruises and festivals and tour my solo show **Swingers** when I can, so I am proof that being a twat in school can be monetised.

Do you have a favourite performance memory, venue or festival so far in your stand-up career?

Last year in Perth I was performing upstairs at Patriots Sports Bar; we had four air con units working overtime, and with 140 people in that room, the fuse was blown every ten minutes throughout my show. It was like a piece of irritating theatre, as the whole room would go dark on a poignant punchline, and then some poor guy at the back of the room had to flick the switchboard to get the show running again. That was memorable. Not great, but memorable.

Your socials are packed with videos of your clever comebacks to hecklersafter so many years of performing, are there still heckles that surprise or stump you?

A few months ago, I was on a cruise ship performing a family-friendly show. I have a joke about kids’ names, so I was asking kids what their names were. I had two children in front of me and one I could see out of the corner of my eye. The first two kids told me their names, and as I was about to ask the third child, I quickly realised it was a dwarf sitting on a couch. I said, “I’m so sorry; when I realised who I was talking to, I cut myself short.”

Do you have a favourite or most iconic response to a heckler so far?

Last year I was at a show where an Asian comedian asked an entirely white, bogan audience of Western Sydney, “Are there any Asians in the crowd?”
A middle-aged woman yelled, “When I was 24, I had a little Korean in me.” The audience lost it. It was a line-up show of five comedians, and that woman got the biggest laugh of the night.

Thanks so much for chatting with us! Let’s end with a final questionwhat are you most excited to share with Perth audiences this year?

Chlamydia—I’m joking! Most people haven’t been tested, but this material has, and it kills! Come watch an award-winning, sexy, fun show where you’ll have heaps of belly laughs and leave feeling brilliant!
