“It’s been tough. I’m pretty sure I’ve lived in the States more than home this year; seen mum and dad a couple of times, it’s different but I’m enjoying it. Bring it on.
The Nott siblings have been on a huge rise since releasing their debut single, Bridges, in 2013. Now a year later they’ve released their debut album, Evergreen, and signed to Capitol Records. Caleb Nott speaks with AARON BRYANS ahead of their performance at Capitol on Friday, November 28.
Having lived and performed together virtually all their lives, Caleb and Georgia Nott were destined for success. Winning numerous competitions as they progressed through childhood, the duo founded their claim to fame Broods in 2013.
“We felt like we came out of nowhere,” Caleb retells. “We only started writing the project last year. It was pretty surprising for us, flying to LA and signing with one of the record label giants.”
Signing to Capitol Records in December last year, the duo would go on to release a debut EP earlier this year which they would quickly follow up last month with the release of their debut album, Evergreen.
“It’s been tough,” Caleb reveals. “I’m pretty sure I’ve lived in the States more than home this year; seen mum and dad a couple of times, it’s different but I’m enjoying it. Bring it on.
“Evergreen’s been really good in New Zealand and Australia, we’re waiting two more weeks to release it in the States. It’s kind of crazy to have an album out when we were only working on the EP last year. We were definitely under a lot of pressure to get it done and we didn’t have that much time, but I like working that way, anyway. You tune out more good ideas because you don’t time for any bad ideas. You don’t spend time on things that don’t have potential.”
An early mentor for the Nott was Joel Little, producer of Lorde’s single, Royals.
“Joel was a huge influence on me not just musically but as a person as well,” Caleb says. “He’s a big mentor for me and Georgia. He’s a talented dude who works his ass off to get to where he is today just a really nice down to earth guy as well.”
The duo are preparing for an Australian tour in November, but there’s not much to give away just yet.
“I’m still trying to figure out what I’m going to do for it,” Caleb says. “If you’ve been to a show already it’s going to be a lot bigger and better. You’d hope so anyway (laughs).”
