AXE GIRL Coming Out Swinging

Axe Girl
Axe Girl

Pop-rock three piece Axe Girl launch their debut self-titled album at Mojos this Friday, November 21, with support from Yokohomos and Hey Lady! We had a word with frontwoman Addison Axe while they plied their trade in the Eastern States.

You’re on the East Coast right now! How’s that going for you, any war stories?

It’s been totally rad! We’ve had so much fun- but no drastic mishaps- yet! Nothing worse than a few bruises and hangovers. But we’re only halfway through, so…

As 2014 draws to a close, how would you characterise the year for Axe Girl? What are the highs?

Highs – releasing the album! This tour, playing State Of The Art fest, supporting Spiderbait, and buying new guitars.

Tell us about the album – it’s been a long time coming.

We are so proud of this album, and feel it is a true representation of us as a live act, but we’ve also been able to add an extra sparkle. One of the reasons it took so long is that we kept running out of cash, but the main reason is that we wanted to get everything perfect – and we definitely achieved that, we wouldn’t change a thing. We raised the money through a Pozible crowd funding campaign and that was such a positive thing to do, we were blown away by people’s generosity and have had an immediate and personal connection with fans and an enthusiastic response to the album straight away.

Where did you record and who with?

We recorded the whole thing at Blackbird Sound studio in Perth with Parko (Dave Parkin). We love him.

What’s your writing process like?

It varies from song to song. Sometimes we jam something from scratch in the rehearsal room and other times I come in with an idea, or a section, or some chords and melody, and between us we shape it into a song.

How does the Axe Girl of today differ from the Axe Girl Perth audiences met not that long ago?

We started as a four-piece and now we are a trio, so that’s the most obvious difference, but we’ve definitely found our sound over the last two-and-a-half years and have locked in as a solid unit.

What’s on the cards for 2015?

We wanna live more, love more, play more, tour more and carry on writing songs.
