The City of Perth will dedicate its streets to our very own International Jazz Festival this long-weekend – Friday, May 29, to Sunday, May 31, with an incredible 52 performances across 19 venues throughout the city, showcasing a diverse range of talented local, national and international artists.
Regarded internationally as one of Australia’s most iconic jazz festivals, the PIJF will base itself within two of the city’s hotspots ,Perth’s Cultural Centre and Brookfield Place, across six stages jointly, with supporting venues including the Ellington Jazz Club, Forrest Place and Northbridge’s Piazza hosting performances from the likes of Sydney’s Tina Harrods, as well as the Graham Wood Quartet and PJ’s Big Band on Saturday, May 30.
Perth’s Cultural Centre will host the festival’s headlining act,world-renowned jazz bassist, Richard Bona. Hailing from New York City and known as the ‘he African Sting’ he will be joined by Sydney’s talented Jonathan Zwartz Sextet, Perth’s own Rachel Claudio (now hailing from Paris), accompanied by many more talented jazz acts. Artists will take to one of three stages including the nearby State Theatre, the centre’s Urban Orchard area, as well as a stage just outside the WA Museum. The James Street Amphitheatre is set to provide free entertainment from its PICA stage, including the Carl Mackey Quartet, WAAPA’s Jazz ensemble and Johannes Luebbers Dectet.
Brookfield Place will be transformed into New Orleans’ famous French Quarter, fittingly titled the Jazz Quarter. Featuring three outdoor stages among some of Perth’s most popular bars, nine incredible acts will take to the stage including Perth’s own Zydecats and the Howie Morgan Band, as well as Brazil’s Juliana Areias.
The festival aims to both recognise and promote jazz music to both the local and international community, giving Perth access to some of Australia’s and the world’s most talented jazz musicians and acts.
Tickets for both Perth’s Cultural Centre and Brookfield Place, as well as the Ellington Jazz Club are available either online ($25) via Eventopia.co – or at the door ($30), with all other supporting venues throughout the festival free to attend.
