WAM announces fresh government funding and “new strategic direction” amidst leadership change

West Australian Music (WAM) have announced they have secured a substantial $1 million in government funding this week, amid plans to embark on “a new strategic direction.”

In a press release, WAM said the new funding came from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and would be split between two instalments of $500,000 across 2024 and 2025. WAM said the new funding came after “a rigorous process of review and engagement,” and they would implement a new strategy aimed at “revitalising the organisation and positioning it to better serve the music industry.”

WAM acknowledged that recent years have presented numerous challenges for the industry and said they are committed to emerging “fit for purpose” by working closely with industry, government, and critical partners and stakeholders.

“This funding underscores the crucial role that WAM plays in supporting and nurturing the Western Australian music industry,” said WAM Board President Al Taylor. “It marks the first significant step in our new strategy, which will see WAM not only reshape but transform, making meaningful contributions to the industry and the broader Western Australian cultural landscape. We are looking forward to sharing more on the strategy over the coming months.”

In a significant leadership change, this week WAM also announced the resignation of its current Executive Director, Livia Carre. A recruitment campaign will kick off soon to secure a new CEO to lead WAM into the future.

Under her leadership, we have navigated some of the most challenging times in our history. We are deeply grateful for her service and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”
