Over 400 young dance hopefuls will compete in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Festival of Dance this WA Day weekend in a bid to catch the eye of two of the country’s leading ballet company Artistic Directors. A Gala will then be held on Monday, June 3.
David McAllister AM, who is the Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, will adjudicate the competition as part of a team of industry professionals which also includes Aurélien Scannella, Artistic Director of West Australian Ballet. With such important dance industry figures to impress, the competition will see more young dancers than ever take part this year.
The event starts today and spans 5 days, culminating in a Gala performance on the final evening on WA DAY where dancers will compete for a range of awards including four coveted and prestigious scholarships at Curtin Theatre at John Curtin College of the Arts.
The Gala on will feature a guest performance by WA’s own West Australian Ballet with Ballet 101 danced by company demi-soloist Oliver Edwardson and another by students of leading arts educational institution Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Also included in the Gala is the presentation of the David McAllister Cup – named for Artistic Director David McAllister, who was born and trained in WA.
RAD Festival of Dance Gala is held on Monday, June 3. Tickets are on sale now.
