Tune in to these music docos at Revelation Film Festival 2024

Revelation Perth International Film Festival is back this year, featuring a diverse array of over 30 feature films, documentaries, and more than 80 short films showing from Wednesday, July 3, to Sunday, July 14. Renowned for its expertly curated selection of films, this year’s program celebrates independent filmmakers in a line-up that pushes boundaries, challenges the status quo, and, most importantly, entertains. Music fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024, with films spotlighting the unconventional, pioneering, and sometimes eccentric figures who have left their mark on music and alternative culture, both across the world and in our own backyard. Check out the highlights below.

Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story *Australian Premiere

From inventing Beach Punk to influencing grunge and hair metal movements, brothers Jeff and Steve Macdonald have maintained the highest level of musical integrity, originality and quality. While they started as a punk band in the ’70s, the brothers were immersed in pop culture, and this rapidly fed into their music. This documentary features not only the brothers but their collaborators, fans and other musicians and creatives, including the likes of Sofia Coppola, The Germs, The Go Go’s, The Melvins and The Runaways, threading some great archival footage throughout.

Green: The Fight For Rock And Roll *World Premiere

70 year old singer Wayne Green faces his fourth shot at fame, haunted by past failures as he embarks on his latest project. Flashbacks reveal near misses with fame in the ’70s (where he was a member of The Phantoms) and 80s (where he joined The Boys and toured with The Kinks). In the ’90s Wayne launched a solo project under the name Kid Green which gained enough notoriety to inspire a movie. This took him to Nashville, but the movie stalled and his chance to work with Decca Records was lost when he decided not to board his flight.

I Should Have Been Dead Years Ago *Australian Premiere

Explore the life, music and artistic output of Stuart Gray (AKA Stu Spasm), the notorious underground rocker who created psychotronic group Lubricated Goat. One of the key proto-grunge bands and another local export that screwed with rock and roll to create something wilder than most could imagine, here was a band, and an artist, that chartered their own wild path.

Mogwai: If The Stars Had A Sound *Australian Premiere

Pioneering cult Scottish band Mogwai have pursued their own creative path, staying true to their musical roots, crafting their own unique sounds across a string of critically acclaimed albums. This documentary takes you deep inside the creative process, following the band as they record their tenth album, while also looking back on their career.

The Epic of Gilgamesh *World Premiere

Follow cult Perth band Injured Ninja’s take on The Epic of Gilgamesh: Live in the Goldfields. A remarkable event in terms of vision, scope and execution—a combination of performance and music created by the band and their numerous collaborators. You may have missed it, but the trio of directors were there with a crew and the results are one of the most exhilarating concert/performance movies that you’re likely to see.
