YAAAS KWEEN Celebrating diversity through sketch comedy

What happens when you throw feminism, people of colour and LGBT diversity on stage?  YAAAS KWEEN happens! YAAAS KWEEN is a sketch comedy romp that explores feminism, diversity and all things millennial going down at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den from Thursday, October 10 until Saturday October 12.

It’s a completely new show featuring sketches that are hot off the press, fresh out of the box and never seen before, brought to you by Only the Human, a locally based improv and sketch comedy company that perform shows and teaches long-form, Chicago-style improvised comedy to the masses.

The night is set to star four ‘kweens’ in their own right – Jaleesa Maher the “sexy” in sell-out Fringe show Crazy Sexy Improv, Amri Mrisho nominated for Best Actor at the WA Unlocked Film Festival nominated One Up, Alex Christophers World Champ of The Improv Showdown, and Tor Snyder, star of sell-out show Big Girls Donut Cry.

Jaleesa Maher from Only the Human says YAAAS KWEEN is different to most other comedy nights happening in Perth. “Firstly it’s sketch comedy,” she said, “and there’s not a lot of sketch happening in Perth, as opposed to stand-up comedy. This is more like the skit/sketch shows like Saturday Night Live, Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave or the earlier Broad City YouTube series.”

YAAAS KWEEN is also all about featuring and celebrating diversity such as gender diversity, LGBTQI+ and ethnic diversity. “We have diverse stories, with experiences that I believe a lot of marginalised folk can relate to but isn’t often projected on the stage,” she said. “Unfortunately, the comedy scene still continues to be heavily straight, white, and male influenced. At times, the scene can unconsciously and consciously exclude women, people of colour, gay people and trans people.”

“Although the topic might seem heavy, all the sketches are written in good fun. People can look forward to laughing at an array of issues that are common to our culture, and common experiences for anyone who has ever felt ‘othered’, or different. And white men will definitely like it too.”

YAAAS KWEEN goes down at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den from Thursday, October 10 until Saturday October 12. Get more information and tickets here or from Only the Human’s Facebook Page.
