VALE BRIAN HOOPER Australian music legend passes away

Brian Hooper
Perth punk and blues legend Brian Hooper has sadly passed away today, losing his battle with lung cancer. Hooper was a popular local figure as a member of Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, and known nationally as the bass player of Beasts of Bourbon, playing in the group from 1990 to 2008. The sad passing comes just days after a benefit concert in Melbourne last weekend which featured a special reunion of the band.

A similar concert is scheduled at Gate One theatre in Claremont tonight featuring Kim Salmon and FriendsThe Kill Devil Hills, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm), King Pig (Brian’s brother Alan has reformed the band for the show), The Teenage Dreamers (Kim Salmon and James Baker), The Floors, The Bible Bashers, Beautiful Losers, The Painkillers and The Polite Society.

Brian’s partner Ninevah Hooper confirmed the news today on his Facebook page:

“Brian’s ship peacefully sailed this morning. I was with him during that departure. It’s the hardest thing a partner could ever do but to say goodbye. I told my three year old twins that mummy and drs could no longer bring daddy home. Daddy was flying away like a [sic] free bird in the blue sky.”

Tributes have flown across the local and national music community following the news of Hooper’s passing.

I GET UP AGAIN will celebrate the life of Brian Hooper at Gate One, Claremont tonight featuring Kim Salmon and Friends, The Kill Devil Hills, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm), King Pig (Brian’s brother Alan has reformed the band for the show), The Teenage Dreamers (Kim Salmon and James Baker), The Floors, The Bible Bashers, Beautiful Losers, The Painkillers and The Polite Society.
