9/10

After seven years The Strokes are finally following up 2013’s Comedown Machine with their sixth record. The New Abnormal is out Friday, April 10, and from what we’ve heard it’s going to be a good one.

At The Door, the first single, was recorded at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu and produced by none other than Rick Rubin. It differentiates itself from anything else in The Strokes’ catalogue but this is definitely one for the playlist.

The synth at the start and the backing track for the verse kick off with a repetitive and slow, electronic-style beat that then twinkles in the chorus. It gives a never-ending feel which somewhat represents what the song is about. The chorus is what makes this a classic Strokes track and the lyrics will hit you in the pit of the stomach: “I’m an ugly boy, holdin’ out the night/ Lonely after light”. The more you listen the better it gets.

Check out the music video for At The Door below and here’s hoping The Strokes add a Perth date to their upcoming tour taking in Splendour in the Grass on Saturday, July 25.
