RED WALL MUSIC FESTIVAL Free Dulcie, Chelsea Cullen and more

Mount Pleasant College
have announced they will be hosting the first ever Red Wall Music Festival on Saturday, September 21. The free event is set to showcase the talent of the school’s past students, and will feature performances from triple j ‘s newest local favourites Dulcie (pictured above), Lucas Jones (previously of These Winter Nights), Chelsea Cullen and Chidgzey.

The live music is set to kick off at 6pm and close out the Mount Pleasant College Open Day, which also offers plenty for music fans and prospective students alike from 2pm. There will be masterclasses from members of the Australian Baroque, who will be exploring the early music repertoire of the ABRSM syllabi.  There will also be work on display from current music and media students, plus food and coffee.

David Chidgzey, music lecturer at Mount Pleasant College (and also performing on the night) said they were putting on the festival to give the public a chance to see Mount Pleasant College and what it’s like to study there, plus have a great night of music and celebrate what some of their past students have been up to. He says he is not surprised at the amount of musical talent that has come from the school, with it being a nurturing environment for artists. “I think the college is set up in a great way for young creatives to explore their talents and dream about where they could end up,” he said. “We give students a lot of space to write, jam, rehearse, record and brainstorm their ideas with the aim of setting them up for the industry or further study at places like WAAPA.”

It’s also no coincidence he is a contemporary musician and active in the industry himself, with it being common among staff at the school. “Mason Vellios (Music Lecturer) works as a composer for film and television and also plays in bands around Perth,” he says. “Patricia Alessi (Head of Music) helps run the Australian Baroque and I myself am writing music and have my own band Chidgzey. So it’s good to teach these students because we’re teaching from experience and we’re basically on the same wavelength in a way!”

Mount Pleasant College Open Day is going down at Mount Pleasant College from 2pm on Saturday, September 21. Red Wall Music Festival is a free event kicking off at 6pm with performances from DulcieLucas JonesChelsea Cullen and Chidgzey. For more information head to the Facebook page.
