TOP TEN GIGS of 2016 by Alfred Gorman

prince-1

1. Prince @ Perth Arena

Number one with a bullet – even before his tragic and untimely death (and the most tragic of the year in my eyes). Prince has always had a special place in my heart, especially after seeing how amazing he was live at Coachella in 2008. His recorded music is one thing – but a Prince live show is something else entirely – he puts his heart and soul into his rare live performances and makes them true occasions. A virtuoso on the guitar and piano, as well as that voice. So to hear he was finally coming to Perth to play an intimate solo piano show was massive news. The show was of course incredible. Very different to a full band set – but equally amazing. He is and will always be one of the greatest musicians, performers, showmen. The way he captured the room and kept them under his spell as he took us through a whirlwind mashup tour through his immense catalogue, with nothing but his custom grand piano, was testament to his magic. I will always regret not being able to make it to the afterparty show, but am eternally grateful that, a few months before he left this world, Prince came to Perth and showed everyone why he is regarded as one of the greatest.
