MALI JO$E Top of the morning

Rounding out a huge 2021, emerging Perth hip-hop act Mali Jo$e has released the new music video for 3:59:59 AM from his recent debut EP, Hours b4 Sunrise.

At just 19, the triple j Unearthed High finalist has been hyped as one of Perth’s most exciting new talents, sharing stages with acts like SUPEREGOAdrian Dzvuke and Coterie. His musical catalogue has always been paired with exciting visuals – realised in previous features by COLORS – and his latest offering proves as no exception.

Filmed and edited by regular video collaborator Dylan Guy, the self-directed clip for 3:59:59 AM captures the contemplative tone of the track, with expansive skyward angles and sweeping landscapes. Performances from vocalist Abraham Tilbury and hip-hop artist Toyotomi Hideyoshi, as well as cameos from SUPEREGO‘s Nelson Mondlane and producer OJC43 make for a well-rounded visual affair.

“I wanted it to reflect the very introspective nature of the song, with quiet moments among the remote locations that serve to tell the story of the three protagonists each overcoming their own mental battles,” said Dylan Guy about the video’s production.

“We wanted to be cinematic,” Mali Jo$e continued, touching on the clip’s simplicity. “A lot of our previous work has been centred around experimenting. Whether that’s the effects we use, the shots that we take, or even the idea itself. But I think a whole video full of beautiful cinematography was something we haven’t tried. I think there’s so much beauty in simple scenic shots that convey their own story within the eyes of the beholder.”

The music video arrives in the wake of Jo$e’s debut EP, Hours b4 Sunrise, receiving attention from Spotify, Apple Music and triple j.
