Perth Arena

Friday, November 7, 2014

Lots of little girls and (too many) big girls in tutus and leopard prints, flocked to Perth Arena last Friday as Katy Perry opened her Prismatic tour of Australia. It wasn’t all tutus, however, as one 12 year-old boy was dressed as a cupcake with his 40-something mum (okay, she was in a tutu) bringing a much-needed touch of Walmart to Perth.

Although jetlagged, Ms Perry was in fine form, storming out with a take-no-prisoners opener in Roar, which is exactly what the sold-out crowd did from that moment until the final bow.

It was certainly a night of hits, with the likes of Dark Horse, I Kissed A Girl, Hot n Cold, Waking Up In Vegas, Unconditionally, Teenage Dream, California Gurls and Firework punctuated by elaborate set and costume changes, plus plenty of audience interaction by way of a pizza delivery (it wasn’t gluten-free, so Perry had to give it away to an audience member), a special birthday moment for a young guy named James and an audience fly-over which saw the singer tied to a bunch of inflatable balloons.

It was loud, frenetic, colourful, fun, energetic and frenzied and, no doubt, a life memory for the thousands of young pop music fans present. Cheers Katy.
