JAZZ BY THE BEACH Jazzing up Scarborough

Perth’s newest jazz festival Jazz By The Beach is set to take over eight of Scarborough’s favourite venues for a two-day festival on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15. In its debut year, the line up sports a selection of world-class musicians including Ali Bodycoat, Catherine Summers, Russell Holmes, Lucky Oceans, Juliana Areias, Howie Morgan, Steven Hensby, Freddie Grigson, Holli Scott, roving band Junkadelic and more.

Ticketed and free events fill the program with something for every jazz lover. Enjoy Gin and Jazz Legends at The Scarborough Beach Bar. Or indulge in brunch and coffees as jazz-funk trio’s take-overs at Livid Skate or Oceanview Jazz Lunch at Zoie. There is also the chance to catch bigger bands like Roaring 20s Beans Burma Boys Jazz High Tea at The Rendezvous Jazz High Tea or indulge in an Evening of Elegance with Catherine Summers for a six-piece swinging band concert at The Scarborough Beach Surf Club that’s being transformed into The Diamond Lounge for the festival.

English born, Perth-based performer Catherine Summers is behind the event, and hopes it will bring new life to the local entertainment scene following a series of COVID-related show cancellations this year including the South West’s winter Jazz By The Bay festival.

“It is my hope that I hope that this beachfront event will attract all kinds of people from all surrounding suburbs and further afield to enjoy the New Orleans buzz with jazz spilling onto the streets,” she said. “After realising the excitement of each of the participating venues to host an event such as this, the project has become bigger and bigger turning a one day and four venue event into two days, eight venues and we now have 18 acts over the two days, it’s fantastic!”

Catherine Summers herself has become a performer of choice in the Perth Jazz music scene over the last few years selling out gigs throughout WA, interstate and overseas. “I’m thrilled and honoured to perform alongside the fantastic talent we have in this first year and it’s great to have such iconic beachfront ocean-view venues involved, such as The Sandbar, The Scarborough Beach Bar, Zoie, The Surf Life Saving Club and more all giving people both a world-class jazz music experience and a world-class ocean beachfront view.”

As Perth continues to live in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jazz By The Beach is planning a Festival which is prepared to accommodate the changing nature of venue restrictions to ensure that the show goes on.

Jazz By The Beach hits multiple venues in Scarborough on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15. To buy tickets or to view the full program head to jazzbythebeach.com.au
