HORROR FOR THE HOMELESS Scream for your scene

HorrorForTheHomeless

Monster Fest presents a spine-tingling smorgasbord of epic proportions on Saturday 11 March 2017. This Horror for the Homeless fundraiser boasts a spectacular collection of the best classic, cult and contemporary horror films from dusk-til-dawn, promising to frighten the pants off even the most horror-hardened film fans. Monster Fest have rolled out their popular events across the East Coast to raise money for people in need, and are thrilled to bring their unique event to the Community Cinemas in Burswood for their first appearance in Western Australia.

Event organiser Neil Foley has led the charge for this initiative and is passionate about supporting the recipient of the event’s proceeds Youth Futures WA:

“The issue of homelessness is something which has been ignored politically in Australia for far too long.” He said. “In Perth alone there are something like ten thousand people homeless on any given night, I find this completely unacceptable that in a country as wealthy as Australia that a city the size of Perth could have so many people living rough. I think as much as it is to raise funds, it’s also about raising awareness for the plight of people homeless or at risk of homelessness – in my option people are by nature good but often an issue like this gets swept under the carpet – this is important as it puts the issue into the public gaze and gets people talking about it, thinking about it, and hopefully acting to help alleviate it.”

“Youth Futures WA are an agency based in Perth who work with homeless young people – they run a myriad of programs but the funds from this particular event will go toward a program called NEST, designed to assist young mothers at risk of homelessness, it’s a pretty amazing organisation so we’re very proud to be involved.”

Monster Fest is also a film distribution company which puts them on front line of releasing and supporting contemporary films in Australia. “We have licensed a bunch of new films to release in Australia – the lineup for Horror for the Homeless mostly consists of films that we are yet to release. The only exception to this, other than The Lost Boys and Scream, which are classics of the genre, is The Autopsy of Jane Doe, which is licensed in Australia to Umbrella Entertainment who were delighted to be involved in the initiative. It is a diverse range of films. There’s something here for everyone – from the ultra terrifying opening film XX, to the all out hilarious and fun Sheborg Massacre, to the dark gothic masterpiece The Eyes of my Mother, it’s a smorgasbord of dark treats.”

Neil Foley also says film fans can expect a few surprises at the event too:

“I think there’s a lot of stuff that people will love – the opening film XX has only a few weeks ago premiered at Sundance, it’s an anthology of horror films all directed by female directors – I think people might get a shock how frightening female writers and directors can be. It’s actually a night of great surprises really – the shorts have been hand picked as the very best of last years fest, they are all really different – fun, crazy, frightening, you name it, it’s all here!”

“The event is a great opportunity for the people of WA to come out and support this initiative”, Foley concluded. “We want people to come along, sit in a park all night and to consider what it might be like to have to do this not by choice but by circumstance – this is a program of horror films for the simple reason that homelessness is a horror and a horror that needs to be eliminated.”
