Buying Your First Family Car? 5 Things to Check Before Making A Decision

Buying your first family car can be both exciting and stressful. There are many things to consider and all of the choices can be overwhelming. Not only do you want to make sure your family will be safe, but you want to make sure the vehicle meets all of your needs. With that being the case, here are 5 things you should check before you jump in and make your final decision.

1. Features

The first thing you want to consider is the features of the vehicle. This isn’t just entertainment or convenient features, but also safety features. Since you’ll probably have children with you, you want to get something that’s as safe as possible. Keep in mind, the newer cards are going to have a lot more features than the older versions. This means you want to make sure you know every feature offered for every car you’re considering.

Some of the entertainment features you’ll probably run into are cup holders in both the front and back, climate control all the way through, heated seats and DVD system. Some of the safety features you’ll want to make sure the car has are traction control, airbags in the front and sides, anti-lock brakes and locking seatbelts.

2. Size

Next, you’ll want to make sure you check out the size of the vehicle. Let’s face it, a sports car might look great, but it’s not going to be easy to get car seats in and take them back out. You’ll want to make sure the vehicle is going to fit everyone comfortably. The last thing you want is to have too many people in the car and not enough seats. If possible, try to get a car with at least 4 doors, since it’ll be much easier for loading and unloading.

Depending on how many kids you have, you’ll also want to make sure the backseat can fit the right amount of car seats and/or booster seats. All the seats should fit snugly without overlapping or moving. Finally, make sure you have plenty of cargo space to store things like strollers!

3. Insurance Rates

Since buying a vehicle isn’t cheap and is quite the investment, you want to make sure you take a look at car insurance rates before making a decision. It might not seem like a big deal, but the last thing you want is to drop a bunch of money on a new car, then have to worry about a huge payment each month for insurance. This is even truer if you’ll be paying a car payment every month.

Keep in mind, flashier and more dangerous vehicles are going to have a much higher insurance payment than a more subtle and safer vehicle. If you aren’t really sure what kind of vehicles get the best rates, try doing an online search. Once you know which ones get the best rates, you can narrow down your search to those types of vehicles.

4. Gas Mileage

Since it’s going to be quite a bit of money from the get-go, you want to make sure you get a vehicle that gets the best gas mileage possible. It’s not really a good thing to have to put in $60 in gas every other day. Even if you can afford it, it’s going to end up adding up and really taking a lot of money. This is especially true when you think about the monthly maintenance costs you’ll be paying.

The good news is that many of the newer vehicles get much better gas mileage! Some of them will give you up to 40 miles per gallon. If you can find one that gives at least 20 or more miles per gallon, you’ll be filling up a lot less and you’re gas will last longer.

5. Style

The final thing you want to think about is the style of the car. This is going to greatly depend on how many people are in your family and whether or not you plan on adding more members in the future.

The biggest thing to think about is finding something that fits everyone comfortably and has enough doors to easily get everyone in and out. The bigger your family is, the bigger the vehicle should be. It’s always better to have extra space than not enough!

Now that you know some of the things you should look at before buying, you’ll be able to find the vehicle that meets your needs the best. Make sure you do a lot of research and look at cars that you’re considering in person. This will let you get a real feel and see if you really do like it! You’ll be driving the perfect car for you and your family in no time!
